Andrew ID & Authentication
Everything about your Andrew ID: setup, password management, two-factor authentication, and troubleshooting.
What is an Andrew ID?
Your Andrew ID is the username assigned to every member of the Carnegie Mellon community. It’s typically 3-8 characters, derived from your name. It is NOT your email address.
Password management
Changing your password
- Go to identity.andrew.cmu.edu
- Log in with your current credentials
- Select “Change Password”
- Enter your current password, then your new password twice
- The change takes effect within 5 minutes across all services
Forgot your password?
- Go to identity.andrew.cmu.edu
- Click “Forgot Password”
- Follow the identity verification steps
- You’ll need access to your recovery email or phone
If you cannot complete online recovery, contact the Computing Services Help Center at 412-268-4357 (HELP) or visit in person at Cyert Hall.
Two-Factor Authentication (Duo)
Adding a new device
- Log into identity.andrew.cmu.edu
- Navigate to “Two-Factor Authentication”
- Click “Add Device”
- Follow the Duo enrollment prompts
- Test the new device immediately
Lost or replaced phone
If you still have your old phone number: use SMS passcodes. If you don’t: contact the Help Center (412-268-4357). They can issue a temporary bypass after identity verification.
Traveling internationally
- Duo Push requires data connectivity — enable “Duo Restore” for third-party authenticator backup
- Pre-generate a list of offline passcodes in the Duo app before traveling
- SMS passcodes work in most countries but may incur carrier charges
WebISO
WebISO is CMU’s single sign-on system. When you see the WebISO login page, you’re authenticating through the central identity provider.
Common WebISO issues
- Redirect loop: Clear cookies for
*.cmu.edu, restart browser - “Authentication failed”: Check Caps Lock, wait 5 min after password change
- “Duo push not received”: Open Duo app, check connectivity, try SMS passcode
Account lifecycle
- Active: Current students, faculty, staff
- Grace period: 30 days after graduation/departure
- Alumni: Limited access (email forwarding only by default)
- Sponsored accounts: Available for collaborators; sponsored by a CMU faculty/staff member
